Cruise ship Iona: work on board pauses

Papenburg/Bremerhaven, 20.03.2020 –

Public life in Germany is almost at a standstill. MEYER WERFT is now feeling this with its newbuilding - the cruise ship Iona. The ship was brought safely to the North Sea via the river Ems, successfully completed initial tests and is now moored in Bremerhaven.

In order to continue to guarantee the health of the employees and due to increasing and daily changing restrictions and requirements of the authorities, the management of the shipyard has decided to reduce the number of people on board the Iona to a minimum. On board the new cruise ship, only a greatly reduced crew, necessary for the operation and safety of the ship, will be on site. Interior work and testing at sea will be suspended for the time being.

At the same time, MEYER WERFT is taking numerous measures to maintain the shipyard's operations at Papenburg. So far, a chain reaction and the spread of the pandemic at the shipyard itself could be prevented.

"We have been working intensively for weeks on a variety of preventive measures at all locations and are constantly optimising them in order to delay the spread of the corona virus. Moreover, we are constantly in close cooperation with the shipping companies", explains Thomas Weigend, Managing Director of MEYER WERFT.
