Papenburg, 2 July 2007 - Today the first outfitted block of 18 blocks in total of the new 14,200-gt passenger ship for Indonesia, Gunung Dempo, was put in place in building dock I at MEYER WERFT.
Mr. Wendy Aritenang, Secretary General of Ministry of Transportation, placed the traditional lucky penny on the blocks before the 600-ts crane lowered the block of the new ship. This first unit, a double bottom, weighs approx. 133 tons, is 14 m long and 20 m wide. The Gunung Dempo is ship number 24 MEYER WERFT is building for the island state of Indonesia. The ferry will accommodate 1,583 passengers. The length overall is 146.80 m, the breadth 23.40 m, and it will be able to operate at a speed of more than 20 knots.
The ship will be equipped with two main engines made by Caterpillar(Type MaK), each having an output of 6,000 kW so that the total propulsive power will be 16,320 hp. Moreover the ship can carry 98 containers. The ship will be delivered to Indonesia in the summer of 2008.
