On 21 June 2008 MEYER WERFT in Papenburg delivered the 24th passenger ship for Indonesia to the Directorate General of Sea Transportation in Jakarta. Prior to the delivery, the 14,030-gt vessel was named Gunung Dempo by the godmother Mrs. Arita Jusman, the wife of Indonesia's Minster for Transportation. Compared to her predecessors, the Gunung Dempo looks a bit different. She represents an advanced type of ship out of a series of passenger ships for Indonesia, which cannot only accommodate 1,583 passengers, but is also designed to carry 98 twenty-foot-equivalent units (TEU). The Gunung Dempo is 146.50 m long and 23.40 m wide. Upon completion of this vessel, MEYER WERFT has built a total of 30 ships for Indonesia (24 passenger ships, 5 freighters/passenger ships and 1 gas tanker)since 1958. To date more than 97 million passengers in Indonesia have travelled on passenger ships built by MEYER WERFT. In close cooperation with P.T. Pal Shipyard in Surabaya, another three ships were built on their premises, having a capacity of 500 passengers. The first unit was completed in 1995, the other two followed by the end of 1999. These ships are operated as feeders for the vessels built in Papenburg. The cooperation between the island state of Indonesia and MEYER WERFT counts among the most successful projects in the history of German development politics. On 24 June the Gunung Dempo is scheduled to leave Emden for Indonesia. She is expected to arrive in the Indonesian capital Jakarta approx. three weeks later. Port of registry for the Gunung Dempo will be the Indonesian seaport Palembang. Gunung Dempo - Main Particulars
