Christening in N.Y. by Whoopi Goldberg
Papenburg, 31.07.2003 - The latest cruise vessel from the MEYER WERFT Shipyard of Papenburg, Germany - the 90,090 GT Serenade of the Seas - was delivered to Royal Caribbean International (RCI) on Wednesday 30 July 2003. Serenade of the Seas is the third luxury cruise vessel of the Radiance-class the Papenburg shipyard built for Royal Caribbean International. This newbuilding will further strengthen Royal Caribbean's leading position in the global cruise industry. The Radiance-class vessels are the most innovative and comfortable cruise ships worldwide. In addition to a very slim, yacht like design with extensive use of glass, the ship's interior offers a variety of special features and unprecedented comfort. More than 80% of the cabins are outside cabins. 90% of the outside cabins do have private balconies. The gas turbine plant, state-of-the-art stage technology and interactive communications systems provide comfort, entertainment and safety of the latest technical standards as well as an environmentally beneficial operation. The ship was designed in close cooperation with the owners and optimized using computer calculations and model tests. The slim lines of the vessel with its 15 decks as well as the novel propulsion drive and the innovative gas/steam turbine system provide excellent manoeuvring and sea-keeping characteristics resulting in extremely low sound and vibration levels. After delivery the Serenade of the Seas will sail from Amsterdam to Boston, USA on 4 August 2003. The christening ceremony will take place in New York on 22 August 2003. In the Fall she is sailing with destination Canada/New England. In November 2003 Serenade of the Seas repositions to San Juan, where she will start cruises in the Southern Caribbean. The fourth vessel of the Radiance-class-series, Jewel of the Seas, is still under construction at MEYER WERFT shipyard and will be delivered to RCI in spring of 2004.
