Work begins on the fourth ship for Norwegian Cruise Line
Work has begun on the first building phase for the latest member of the Norwegian Cruise Line fleet. Directors of the American shipping company were joined by representatives of MEYER WERFT for the keel laying ceremony on 5 April 2016. During the ceremony, block 45 of the 168,800 GRT ship was hoisted into the shipyard’s covered building dock II.
The traditional “lucky cent” was placed under the block by Andy Stuart, President of Norwegian Cruise Line, Harry Sommer, EVP Norwegian Cruise Line International and David Herrera, President Norwegian Cruise Line China, before the 800 ton crane positioned the 750 ton element on the engine room module which had been brought into the dock a few days previously. ““We are absolutely thrilled to celebrate the Keel Laying for Norwegian Joy today with our partners at MEYER WERFT,” said Norwegian Cruise Line President and Chief Operating Officer Andy Stuart. “Norwegian Joy is yet another evolution for Norwegian Cruise Line and we know”. The Norwegian Joy is the fourth of six ships being built by MEYER WERFT for Norwegian Cruise Line through to 2019.
“Today we have placed the first of about 80 blocks in our building dock,” says Bernard Meyer, Managing Director of MEYER WERFT. “We are very proud to continue the good cooperation with our long-standing customer Norwegian Cruise by building the Norwegian Joy.”
After its completion, Norwegian Joy will begin its first voyage to China in summer 2017. The ship has been developed specially for the Asian market and will be used solely for Chinese passengers.
The cruise ship measures 324 m in length, 41.4 in width and is offering a capacity for 4,200 passengers. The new-build will combine all the advantages of the Norwegian Breakaway, Norwegian Getaway and Norwegian Escape and has an additional deck to offer the passengers many added features and attractions.
